Salesian Mustangs Soccer Banquet Awards Night, June 2009

Having been a Personal Trainer for over 10 years now has been very exciting. I've met people from all walks of life from those whom gather change to meet with me to those whom can afford to pay me way more than I charge.
One of the things I started doing last year to add more excitement to my abilities and carreer as a Trainer was to volunteer some time at Bishop Mora Salesian Highshcool in Boyle Heights,
California. Last year around this time I started working with the Salesian Mustangs Football program which included both Junior Varsity and Varsity. In the wake of this I also started putting time with the Mustangs Soccer Team.
It was exciting to work with this great group of athletes because they had so much heart and truly believed that the program I had put together was going to help them. Many of the soccer players including the Coaches told me that they could felt the difference in their movement skills and their endurance. It was great to hear this. Nothing feels more rewarding than hearing these kinds of compliments. Listening to these guys tell me how great they felt and how resistant to fatigue they were was full-filling and heart-warming because it gave me a clue that I was on the right track. The team had a great season and they won all the way through Southern Section CIF Divisional Finals. It was exciting to watch these guys win. They credited their victories to the training I took them through but I know that Coach Sergio Villasenor played a significant factor in this, as I was his volunteer assistant. Villasenor believed in my program and gave me the oppurtunity to take charge of several workouts. The kids had fun and really put in their effort, always asking for a greater challenge and that I always did.

It was great to be at the awards banquet and my girlfriend Raquel was there to be by my side as I enjoyed this momemt with the team.
The Soccer Coaches Perez, Moises Delgado and Mark Johnson felt that we should recieve some recognition for our dedication to this great Salesian Soccer Program and that they did by rewarding me with the a special award.
The greatest feeling came to me from this. It showed me that my time was truly appreciated and holding this award and the trophy awarded to the team felt so good it is indescribeable.
Watching them win the State Semi-Finals was exciting, too! They played a tuff and agressive game but once they made it to the State Play-Offs this is where the tables were no longer in our favor. The game started very good on both ends but in the end we could not hold the competition down as we had done in all previous matchups. Either way it was a victory because to have gone this far into competition was the best thing that could happen for these kids. Last year they won in state and now as time is passing we plan to take this Soccer team to the State Championships again but with a victory and State recognition.

Congratulation Salesian Mustangs Soccer!

Healthy Fruits and Veggies In Season for the Spring

by Damien (a.k.a. Adrian Orozco)

Eating for the season is the best way to get all the natural benefits that nature provides for us. Spring like winter and all the other seasons gives us a variety of fruits and vegetables to choose from. My favorite fruits for the Spring happen to be strawberries and oranges. This is when they are as sweet as nature can get it for us. On the vegetable side it is the Sweet Yellow Corn that the Native American tribe known as the Iroquis enjoyed as a staple in their diets. From another variety of corn came Maize which is well known for its use in making corn tortillas and tamales amongst Mexican, Central American and South American people.

Ofcourse I have other favorites like Spinach and Mango. These fruits and vegetable provide us with many of the essential vitamins and nutrients which protect help protect us from the enviroment and help to promote a healthy body function. Fruits like strawberries provide us with Vitamin C and Folate. Oranges ofcourse also provide us with these important nutrients.

8 medium strawberries can provide you with as much as 2 grams of fiber. With one medium sweet corn you can also get 2 grams of fiber and is also a good source of vitamin C. Did you know that a 1 1/2 cup of Spinach will give you as much as 5 grams of fiber and only has 10 grams of carbohydrates?
The same serving will give you nearly 70 percent of your Vitamin A needs and is also a good source of folate and magnesium. Below is a list of fruits and vegetables that are in peak season for the spring season:

Apricots, Artichokes, Asparagus, Broccoli, Butter Lettuce, ChayoteSquash, Chives, Collard Greens, English Peas, Fava Beans, Fennel, Fiddlehead Ferns, Green Beans, Honeydew, Mango, Morel Mushrooms, Mustard Greens, Oranges, Limes, Pea Pods,
Pineapple, Ramps, Rhubarb, Snow Peas, Sorrel, Spinach, Spring Baby Lettuce, Strawberries, Sweet Corn, Sugar Snap Peas, Swiss Chard, Vidalia Onions and Watercress.

Make sure to pick a variety of fruits and veggies from this list to ensure that along with your protein and other carbohydrate consumption you are getting all the essential nutrients to prevent any deficiencies. Enjoy your spring!

Why train with Kettlebells?

Kettlebells are a unique way of training both the cardiovascular system and the musculo-skeletal system. Kettlebells have a an advantage of being used in such a unique way that any attempt to mimic the training style is inferior to the true methods used for this equipment. Superior grip strength can be developed by Kettlebells. If your goal is to become fit in the least time possible or gain an athletic advantage along with improving your atheletic potential than this is it. Want superior core strenght, again this is it. Most importantly if you want to improve your work capacity over time without the setbacks of fatigue, well that is definitely a given with Kettlebells.
